Apr 1 -St Augustine

We went to St. Augustine, Florida today.  It is said to be the oldest city in Ameica. We have heard many people tell us that this city was a 'must see' and we are so very glad that we spent the day touring around St. Augustine!  What a neat and beautiful place.
One of our first stops was the oldest wooden school in the United States.  We learned that the students that attended this school attended all year long, as they would take days off school to work in the fields or at home when needed.  There were strict rules for students and for the teachers too.
For example, they had a closet under the stairs in this school where students were put if they misbehaved.
The teachers were also given rules, such as, you were allowed to court (date) once per week unless you attended church, which then allowed you to court twice per week.  Also, after teaching 10 hours in the day, the teacher was to read the Bible or other good books.

We then continued our walking tour through the narrow streets to the oldest home in the city and enjoyed a tour of the home and learned that the kitchen was a separate building from the home.  They built like this because of the risk of fire so that if there were a fire it would not burn down the whole house.

We went on a tour of Fort Castillo, which provided protection for the city.  We learned that cannons were very accurate. A small cannon could hit a target 1.5 miles away.  A large cannon could hit a target 3 miles away with accuracy. The horizon over the Atlantic Ocean was 7 miles away so there was ample time to prepare for the defines of the city.
  I truly loved St. Augustine!
