Today we visited Biltmore, at
Asheville, NC. In the Blue Ridge mountains.
Biltmore is the largest home in America at 175,000 square feet. There is
4-1/2 acres of rooftop! It once sat on 125,000 acres but much of it was sold to
the federal government for a national park. Today the estate has ONLY 8,000
acres.
It was built by George
Vanderbilt in the late 1800’s and is a magnificent place to see. All of the
carvings, both wood and stone were done on-site and in-place. Abundant gardens
surround the home. Photography is not allowed inside the home which is still
fully funded and cared for by the Vanderbilt family.
We chose to do an audio
tour. There were different ones for adults and children. The kids tour was narrated
by “Cedric” the family St Bernard. The tour was wonderful but because of the house detail we were left wondering more about the Vanderbilt family. We felt like we had a much better detail on the Hearst family when we viewed the 98,000 sq foot Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA.
